Traditionally in Japan during confinement, the new mother is not allowed to take a shower during the 30days of postpartum care. She is however encouraged to take sponge bath using Grated Ginger Roots to rub on her body. This was to aid in healing. They were also not allowed to leave the house for around 2-4 weeks after birth.
For some Japanese Women, they felt an obligation to resume back her roles and household chores when they return back to home once she thinks that her recovery time was adequate.
They had a belief that breastfeeding was an emphasis on a mom's recovery as a priority. Special food of carp fish soup and mochi was to be taken to help in breast milk production. Hot soups such as miso was also to promote good health.To hasten the discharge of the blood clotting, spinach and green vegetables was to be consumed.
After deliver, the japanese mother uses the binder known as Hara-Obi which they believe to strengthen and support their back and abdominal muscles. It is about 15 to 20 cm wide and around 4.5 metres long. It needs to go round the body at least 3-4 times. They believe that it is to help to support the uterus as well..
A special ceremonial celebration called OSHICHIA was done when the baby turns 7 days old. In this celebration, the baby will be officially named by the father and mother , sometimes by the grandparents. usually only close family and friends were invited to attend this event. Special food were served at this ceremony such as red rice with beans, sea broom fish (TAI) and many vegetables.
The other ritual was the HESONO O- where it involves the baby's umbilical cord. When the cord falls off , it was to be put inside a special wooden box and kept indefinately. This signifies a well wish for the mother- child relationship in the future.
When the baby turns 100days old, another ceremony – HYAKUNICHIMAIRI was performed. It begins with the baby, mother, grandmother and great grandmother dressing in their finest clothes and visiting the family temple. A special prayer is given by the priest of the temple for good health of the baby. Thereafter, they will return home where all the other familly and friends would join in for a celebration with a feast. ( see pic below)
