Indians postpartum is usually up to 40 days. As massage is carried out using specially blended oil . A favourite is Sesame Oil due to its warming properties. The new mum is not allowed to do any chore in the house. She is only to concentrate on nursing of the baby and resting. A traditional practice starts when the expectant mother is in the last trimester, either she goes to stay with her parents or the mother will come and stay with her to have deep bonding. After delivery, the mother is not allowed to be stressed because it affects the milk supply and recovery. She is encouraged to sleep whenever the baby is sleeping. They believed that postpartum care is interlink, and it should be focusing on the mother , the newborn and the bonding between them.
Foods that are believed to be "cold" should not be consumed. Boiled milk or warm water is served. Specific food is served during the confinement period. Some receips includes:
- Harira- A traditional recipe given by elders to the new mum during the 40 days of confinement. It is believed to provide vital nutrients and aid lactation
- Panjiri – A traditional dish believed to provide vital nutrients and help lactation.
- Gondh ke laddoo (edible gum laddoos) -A traditional dish made by elders for the new mother. It is believed to provide vital nutrients and speed up recovery.
- Ajwain halwa – A traditional dish believed to aid digestion and lactation. Also believed to cleanse the uterus
- Ajwain parantha – A good breakfast or dinner option. Believed to aid digestion and lactation, and cleanse the uterus
- Mandua (finger millet) ka halwa A traditional dish made in the Kumaon and Garhwal regions of India.
- Almond (Badaam) Sheera
- Methi (fenugreek leaves)
- Oats porridge
The diet during confinement is very rich due to the intake of ghee. The meals must also be taken on time to strengthen the digestive system. They believed that between 12 to 1 pm is the optimal time to take the lunch.
Massage for the mum and the baby is vital. Oil massage is to soothe back the fatigue body and to recuperate the body system. It is to help to tone the womb and detoxify the body. The newborn is also given baby massage in the morning untils the cord falls off. Traditionally, chickenpea floor mixed with turmeric, sandlewood powder and yogurt are used as soap for the baby.
Henna is also a common tradition of the indians. After delivery, the mother must have all of her fingernails and toenails hennaed. This ceremony is known as "Java Punjani". The purpose is to purge out any toxic incurred during the labour process. If the mother does not goes through this ceremony, she carries the risk of improper recovering after birth.
