Toys are more than just fun and games for kids.  Most toys provide at least some opportunity for children to learn.  The best toys engage a child's senses, spark their imaginations and encourage them to interact with others.

Babies and Toys

Babies are eager to learn about the world around them, and they have much to learn.  Every new shape, color, texture, taste and sound is a learning experience for them.  Giving your baby toys that are safe and stimulating will help him discover his senses.

Rattles and toys that make music are favorites of infants.  Toys with contrasting colors are fascinating to babies and stimulate their developing vision.  As they grow, infants can use toys to explore object permanence and cause and effect relationships.  They also need objects such as blocks to help them build motor skills and hand-eye coordination.

Toys for Toddlers

Toddlers can play with a wider variety of toys than they did when they were smaller.  They might still enjoy some of the toys they played with as babies, and that's fine.  The same blocks they played with a year or two ago can provide them with new and different educational opportunities as their knowledge expands.  But they also need toys that are designed with kids their age in mind.

Shape sorters are great for toddlers.  They teach them how to match similar items and provide parents the opportunity to teach them the names of the shapes.  Lego blocks provide an opportunity to learn more about colors and symmetry while they develop their motor skills.

Toys for Preschool and School-Aged Children

2. Dolls and Stuffed Animals - Children love to pretend that their dolls, action figures and stuffed animals are real people or animals.  This can provide them with hours of entertainment.  They may even play with two or more at a time, making different voices for each one.  That's not only fun for them, it's fun for you to watch too.

3. Play-Doh – You probably played with Play-Doh when you were a kid.  Chances are that if you did, you have fond memories of it.  Similar to blocks, Play-Doh allows children to make anything they can imagine.  The factories and tool sets you can buy to go with it are nice but they are not a necessity.

So how do you know how much challenge is too much?  Sometimes it is difficult.  It is important to keep activities attainable while still making sure that the child is in fact learning new things.  Here are some ways to do that.

* Electronic educational toys often allow parents and children to choose a skill level.  Make sure that your child is working on a level that is appropriate for him.  If you're not sure, watch while your child goes through the levels starting with the lowest.  Determine the highest level he has mastered and have him work on the next one.

* Most computer learning games automatically go to the next level when a child has mastered the previous one.  If there is an option to save the game at each level, try to make sure that he does so.  Then, instead of going back through things he already knows each time he plays, he can start out on a level that is a challenge for him.

* An older child's schoolwork might be a good indicator of what he has mastered and what he needs to work on.  If there is an area he has trouble in you could expand on it at home.  If he appears to have mastered everything you may want to talk to his teacher about giving him more advanced work to do at school or at home.

* If your child has educational toys that he doesn't play with try to determine why.  He will probably just tell you that he doesn't like them, but it could be that they are either above or below his individual level.  If you can get him to try them while you supervise, it could provide some valuable insight and help you make better selections in the future.

Working on a level that is comfortable for your child yet provides a challenge is crucial to his educational success.  Too little challenge will cause your child to become bored and too much could cause frustration and low self-esteem.  Always remember what is good for one child might be very different from what is good for another child of the same age.  Taking cues from your child will help you decide what level is the best for him.

So how are they able to be involved in my work?

1. They count stocks for me. My kids know how to arrange the stocks in order and while doing so, they learn counting and also foster order practice.
2. They stick my labels on my stocks. Pasting the stickers stimulate their motor skills and they learnt how to stick the label in the right matter so that the wording appear readable. Through this simple "play" , they are expose to alphabets characters and also learn position ( center / left / right)
3. My kids loves stamping. All my receipts are stamped with the company chop and they always volunteer to do the stamping. They feel that it is so much fun and simply love this task.  This again work on their motor skills
   
4. Punches . It is always an interesting hobby for them. They get to punch my invoices, stock card and all.
5. Sticking. Indeed 2 mini post officers in my home… Sticking stamps on the envelope as become their daily activities. (plus it a great way to prevent them from sticking stickers all over the house)
6. Wrapping. My kids love to help when i am wrapping stocks. One will hand me the brochure and the other a name card. Together they will fight over who scotch tape is longer and stick it on the parcel. While doing so, they learn how to wrap things and what are the materials required. Sometimes they  use the scissor and does cutting too.. left over bits and pieces are used to make paper crown or braclets for the girls

Through involving my kids with my work, it actually prepares them when they goes to society because they see what is adult work. My kids know when i am at the laptop that mummy is working and my stocks are not to be messed with because it is mummy's work. Becoming a work at home mum does require effort and persistance. Involving your child makes the journey easier and makes bonding stronger too and yes your kids learn so much more from you.

Blocks are one of the most basic toys you can find.  It may seem they don't really do anything and in their simplest form they're just little wooden cubes.  But to a child, they represent a world of possibilities.

For some parents, these feelings of bonding takes place minutes right after birth while some may takes a few days or slightly longer. If you do not feel the bond right after birth, it is normal.

Bonding requires time. Give your self some time to adjust to this new life. You cannot force bonding, it will comes naturally over time. As you sees your child everyday and taking care of her, you will realise that when you see her little smile, your heart fills with great happiness and love. That bonding …!!

There has been much debate about which toys are the best for children.  Some argue that high-tech toys provide the best educational opportunities, while others say that simpler toys that require imagination and creativity teach a child to think for himself.  But most children end up with a mixture of both types of toys and perhaps that approach gives them the best of both worlds.

Electronic Toys vs. Non-Electronic Toys

Man can also suffer from postpartum blues. It is often related to feeling left out or being ignored because your wife is paying more attention to your newborn. It is not unreasonable to have feelings of envy, frustration and resentment. But leaving those feeling unchecked and unexpressed appropriate is unhealthy. Share your struggles with your wife but do not make demands on her. Or confide in other more experienced and trusted fathers

3. Be Involved with your baby right from the start
Some father may think that they do not have much to offer an infant except to bring in the money to feed the extra mouth. however spending time with your baby, playing with him , taking him to the park, singing and reading to him , bathing him are also ways to help you overcome postpartum blues and bond with your baby.

4. Expect and Accept the changes in your life
You probably had more time to do things on a whim and a fancy before you baby is born. Now that your routine has been disrupted – you will always need to consider your baby when making plans. Learn to go with the flow. Being willing to make sacrifices will certainly aid you to adjust better during this potentially trying time.

* The age on the box is not always a good indicator of how appropriate a toy is for your child.  That doesn't mean that you should ignore it completely, because it usually represents the ages that the toy has been deemed safe for.  But a toy that is safe for a certain age group is not necessarily appropriate for it's educational level.

* A toy that is good for one child may not be the best choice for another child of the same age.  Children learn at different rates, and while many toys are made for the average child of a certain age range, your child could be ahead or behind.  Rather than relying solely on numbers, take cues from what your child is comfortable with.

* Babies need toys that are safe and stimulating.  Bright, contrasting colors, unusual textures and interesting sounds are good things to look for.  Toys that make noise or light up in response to the baby's actions provide an opportunity to learn about cause and effect.

Many toys are good for developing fine motor skills.  Blocks and puzzles are two of the simplest and best.  But almost any small toy can encourage the refinement of fine motor skills.

Cognitive Development

Many educational toys concentrate on cognitive development.  This includes things like remembering, problem solving and decision making.  These skills are essential for success in school and all other aspects of life.

Any activity that requires imagination has the potential to encourage problem solving and decision making skills.  Games such as Memory and Bop It can help a child develop his memory.  Adults might even benefit from playing them with their children.

Social Skills

These are 10 tips to keep in mind for  ensuring top safety for your baby

1. Baby Cot - Buy a sturdy, approved baby cot. check the dimension and design of the gaps of the cot, check if there is any safety latch. Check what type of wood and paint is used as all approved cots uses paint that is safe for infants

2. Baby Mattress- Buy a firm yet breathable mattress.If the mattress is too soft, it does not provide enough support for your baby spine and neck support. Remember baby sleeps at least 16 hours in a day so invest a good one for you child

3. Bed Sheets , pillow and blanket – Newborn do not need any pillow as their neck muscles is not fully matured yet. By lying flat on the mattress is the best way to prevent any accidental suffocation by the pillow. if you need to use a blanket, make sure to check regularly that it does not cover the baby's face. Make sure the bedsheet fits the cot tightly

4. Soft Toys- try not to put any soft toys in the cot although it may be very tempting to beautify, this may pose as a hazard for suffocation . Newborn skin is delicate and respiratory system are not fully matured therefore  this prevention helps to minimise any allergies to the baby.

5. Baby Clothes- wear light weight and comfortable clothing for your baby, Avoid clothes with too many strings to prevent any detangling of the strings with the baby hands. Try to use a baby detegent to wash your infant clothes to minimise any skin allegies

6. Baby Car Seat- this is one of the top prority if you are driving. It helps to keep your infant safe during the car rides. Check that you buy an approved car seat. If you have using a second hand, make sure that the buckle are working and the attachment to your car seat is working properly.

7. Sleeping position - Research shows that the safety position for your baby is to sleep on his back. Until your baby is able to control his neck muscles, it is not advisable to put the baby to sleep on the tummy to prevent suffocation.

8. Feeding the baby- if you are bottle feeding your baby, make sure you test the temperature of the milk ( expressed milk / formula)  on your inner wrist before feeding your baby. This is to prevent your baby tongue from getting burnt.

9. Trimming your baby nails- newborn have very long nails. Make sure to use a infant nail clipper or scissor to trim your baby's nail regulary. This will prevent your baby from scratching himself.

10. Bathing - Test the water temperature before you put you baby in. Ensure that you keep an eye on your baby at all time while bathing, If you are not confident of bathing your baby, put a bathing net into your bath tub to help you support your baby while bathing.

Today, i am glad to be one who is able to live  my passion and choose my way if life. I always believe everything happens for a reason and it is not coincidentally. My mentor and my dad always reminds me that any failure or obstacles encountered is a learning curve and it will definately help you in future.

i am thankful that i have a great family who supports and trusts me fully so that i am able to live my passion.

As a mum myself, these thoughts were also on my mind day in day out when i was also working full time years back. It can be quite a mental torture especially when your physical is already dragging you down everyday. I was battling with these thoughts for at least 3 years, from the 1st born right until my 2nd child was born. Since that day I know that the freedom and diapers are inversely proportional. I wonder why this wasn't taught by my maths teachers during my school days.

I've never had the urge to carry any babies before, because I was afraid my strong arms will some how injured them. But things change when my daughter was born.

These are some of my experience as a new dad:

1. When I first held my daughter, it's the first time I felt I really own something.

2. I had to remember some numbers, such as the exact ml of cold and hot water and the number of teaspoon of milk powder.

3. I learnt to love the smell of my baby girl's soiled diaper fast.

4. When she crys, I just do 3 things: Feed her, Change her diaper, Hug her. If all 3 failed, I will look for experts (my wife and my mum).

5. I found out that by talking and telling my baby girl of what I'm going to do, such as changing her diaper, she seems to understand and cooperate well.

6. Never leave my baby girl alone on my bed even she is sleeping.

7. There was no need to raise my voice when I get frustrated, just leave her to the experts.

8. Always have experts within my reach.

9. I never knew the feeling of smelling my girl's hair can be so magical.

Lastly, my advice to new dads, spend as much time with your children as possible, if not they will be closer to their mums. It's better to have a larger army under your command in the household.
