Hair Loss after pregnancy is pretty common. To some mothers, it can be a short term period where as for some it may be longer than just a few months.
The usual reason for postnatal hair loss is 'hormonal change'. Hormonal changes in general are a very common cause of female hair loss. Almost 98% of woman who given birth experience extra hair loss. During the pregnancy however, hair is often at it's best because of the high levels of female hormones oestrogen (good for hair growth) and progesterone (bad for hair growth), more hair follicles enter the growth phase than normal. After childbirth hormone levels change dramatically, often causing the hair growth cycle to become 'disturbed'. The normal hair growth cycle soon returns hair re-enter into the resting phase. It's at this point that most women notice the hair loss, especially for someone who has long hair. Hair loss normally occurs from the 6th week to the13th week after childbirth. This type of hair loss is usually temporary, once the body has settled down and returned to the pre-pregnancy state, normally at around the 7th month after childbirth. If hair loss continue for more than 3 years, it is recommend to seek a doc advice.
For centuries, the mother has always been the primary caregiver for the baby after childbirth. During postpartum period, the mother has to face physical and emotional battles within herself and also the challenges of taking care of a newborn. In many cultures even till today, this is still widely practised. With the emphasis and education in today's modern world, Daddies are more involved from attending Prenatal classes to "Shopping" around for their new baby. Daddies play a very important role especially during postpartum period.
