When I discovered that I was pregnant, one of my first thoughts was that I was going to breastfeed my baby. It seemed like a natural thing to do and it did not sound all that hard. Through the pre-natal courses that I attended, I realized that maybe it is not as easy as I thought..and yes, as I have discovered over the past 9 months (and still counting), breastfeeding is not the easiest thing to do as a new mummy.

I attempted to latch my baby on within 15 minutes after she was delivered. It didn't feel too difficult and she seemed to enjoy it too. I thought her loud sucking noises were a great sign.  How wrong was I!!! The loud sucking noises as I learnt was her not latching on correctly.

In fact, she still does it now alot except that she can sleep and drink at the same time now. =) So I was constantly trying to wake her to nurse. And I am quite sure that no matter how prepared one is, the question "is my baby getting enough milk??" will pop in every mother's mind in the early days. I had the thought running through my mind every single time I nursed her during the first few weeks. Just when your supply has stabilized and you thought that the more challenging part is over, more challenges comes up. My baby is one curious and active little girl. Everyone noticed how observant she was even when she was just a very young infant. So when she was about 4 months, she started getting distracted at every little noise, light, person walking by whenever buy ampicilin online she nursed. You don't want to be scrambling with a tight tee with a hungry and anxious baby in tow.

If you are a working mummy like me, you will need to be prepared to express at work to maintain your supply and so that your baby is still able to continue taking breast milk while you are away at work. This can be tricky especially when the work environment is not very conducive. Do speak to your boss about your intentions to continue to breastfeed online ampicillin and get his or her support to express milk in the office before returning to work. If you are one of the lucky few to have a nursing room at work, that is the best. If not, find out if there is a meeting room or store room that you can use. But now, I can't bear to think about weaning her off. And I intend to carry on even beyond my initial goal of one year as long my little princess enjoy it. Here are just some tips which I hope to-be and new mummies would find useful;

~ Do moisturize your nipples with nipple cream prior to delivery date and pack it in your hospital bag. You will find it very useful to soothe sore nipples in the initial weeks
~ Invest in good nursing bras
~ Have plenty of breast pads available at home. You may find that your breasts leaks easily and a lot in the initial phase.
~ If returning to work, invest in a good electric pump. That way, you can work on your laptop, reports while expressing.
~ During the initial months, do try to make an effort to express every 3 to 4 hours in the night if your baby is already sleeping through the night. This prevents engorgement and maintains/increases supply.
~ Drink lots of fluids
~ Let your spouse and family know of your intentions to breastfeed and get their support. This is so important especially for first-time mummies.

We online ampicillin decided not to engage a confinement lady and if we were ever to do it again, we would do it the same. Not having a CL  meant alot of extra chores that hubby had to take on (laundry, cleaning, etc)  so I don't recommend this unless daddy can take at least 3 weeks off work and is willing to be hands on (yes, it includes changing smelly poo-filled diapers and changing sheets with milk spit at 6am!) . However, it also meant that we were really hands on and got to know and bond with baby alot.

Then there is the so called confinement meals or diet. Since we didn't have a CL, my dad was my personal chef. And I enjoyed every meal!! I did cheat a little and had some hawker food once or twice with the permission from my "confinement chef".  Apart from an approximately a litre of red dates tea a day, I just had plain water all other times. Since I was breastfeeding, I had to make sure that I kept hydrating myself.

And yes, there is the infamous post-natal massage. A must-have for mummies who cannot bear to keep any of those flab from preggie days! The massage was a great "me-time" and I dozed off every single time I had the massage. My massage therapist Sudameris Bank S A E C A was really helpful in unblocking the blocked ducts which I had. It was almost as painful as the contractions though!I almost cried cheap buy ampicillin through that. The wrap which has to be kept on for at least 6 hours was uncomfortable and hot, but it does work like a modern version of a high society corset. Minus the lace. 6.10am after 10mins later, i saw pink stain on toilet paper, shout for husband to come, he said he doens't see any pink stain.

6.20am feel gush of discharge, went toilet again, shout for husband again coz really v obvious pink stain. i did have gynae appt at 10+am that day, but decided to go to delivery suite straight. Trying to get myself ready to hospital. in meantime waterbag keep leaking… change a few pads & panty. husband left for work, he said he will come down once i call… i told him to try settle his work by noon n be down.

7am on cab alone, reach KKH, went to McD to have breaklfast 1st. u never know if u really cannot eat then how.

8am register at delivery suite. check by nurse, confirm it's waterbag n symptoms of going into labour. strap to ctg machine at triage.

9.30am start having something like menses cramps (didn't know that contractions feel like cramps) & backache starts.

10.30am finally have a room at delivery suite, went toilet, change into the gown, strap to ctg again.

11.00am Drip inserted & had a shot of antibiotics coz Strep B carrier.

12.50pm VE done. dilation only of finger tip. Insert tablet to get cervix dilated faster.

2.30pm ask for permission to eat, had filet o fish.

3.30pm Contractions every 2 mins, 3cm dilate, ask for epidural.

6.19pm Urine cathether inserted.

7.00pm 4cm dilate, confirm waterbag fully ruptured, contraction not strong, 3 drips altogether – think it's glucose, antibiotics & oxytoxin (to encourage contraction)

8.00pm Night shift staff took over. The midwife is Salamah. Cho went home.

9.00pm change another tube of epidural…

10.11pm 5cm dilate

3.49am 7cm dilate, ask for higher dose of epidural, coz whole nite can't zzz due to contraction. they give me another 2hrs to see if still progress, if not have to emergency c-section. anyway, the higher dose of epidural doesn't help, contraction pain.

6.00am fully dilate. phew, don't need c-section. lower down epidural.

7.00am Salamah going home. Midwife Joyce Heng took over. when she needs to run to another room, a sister came to help. took some time to learn now to push, i was too tired to push too – after so many hrs of pain & vomit & sleepless night. Throughout whole process only 1 midwife n husband in room (ya, think subsidised pt doesn't have any Dr, even MO, during delivery). Confirm epistomy is unavoidable.

9.28am Ambrose is born.

9.31am Husband cut cord. The midwife put baby on my tummy. he opened one eye to look at me. so strange, he doesn't seem to look like me or husband. throughout his time at warmer, he is rather alert. Baby is 2.995kg, 50cm in Ht, 33.7cm for head circ.

After stitching up (by HO) & still vomit, i had ovaltine & lunch (no appetite for lunch). Before I get pregnant, already told my hubby I don’t want to breastfeed my child. Not that I don’t support breastfeeding, but because I do smoke and drinking and my health isn’t that great.

On the day I give birth, after the nurse had done every thing, she asked me whether I want to breastfeed my child, I say yes. Anyway after trying, the nurse says I can try again later at the ward.

I fell asleep all the way till evening and my child had been bottle fed by the nurse. I always tot my milk supply have not kicked in yet.

08-09-08 (week 38):

After monitor awhile, BB heartbeat is good, doc say if I want, I can choose to stay at hospital and go under observation, or I can go home and observe myself, so I decide to go home.

09-09-08:
4 plus in the morning, woke up to go toilet. Was sitting there dong my small biz, out of sudden, I heard a pop sound, and I felt warm water flowing out. Sit there for awhile, and realized my water bag burst, woke Eddie up, tell him my water bag burst. I do my final wash up, bath myself. Lucky we had packed the bag and left it in the car. So happily off we go. Before heading to hospital, decide to drop by 7-11 to grab something to eat.Reach hospital at 6pm, the same buy Ampicillin nurse attend to me the night b4, ask me what happened this time, told them, my water bag burst. And soon they pushed me into the delivery suite.Get change and strap to CTG, wait for doc to come in.

7.35am another doc came in, check me again and tell me I am 4cm dilated, and I was timing the contraction, abt 5 mins once and it last abt 2 mins, so the nurse put 2 drip on me, one of them is to induce me.
At 8 plus, Eddie decided to go and have his breakfast, so I told him ok, don’t take too long. While watching the TV, I was also timing the contraction. As the time goes by, I feel the contraction getting closer, and the nurse came in and out asking me whether I still can take it. I tell no buy ampicilin online problem, I still can bear the pain. However, every time the contraction hit, I will start cursing Eddie, for taking such a long breakfast.

Finally after all the pushing and stitching, I fell asleep, and by the time they push me to ward, it was 3 plus and I continue with my sleep there

Delivery of my first child

My first delivery was very smooth. My son, Ashton was delivered less than 3 hours after we arrived in hospital. I credit this to pre-natal bonding. His expected due date is on the 23 Jan but when I went check-up on the 21 Jan, my doctor told me that there was no sign that he was going to pop any time. He then arranged for me to check into the hospital on 23 Jan to be induced. I heard some stories that inducing birth is a very painful process and I prayed that I would not have to go through it.

I told my son everyday that it is going to be painful to go through induce birth and ask him to make the delivery smooth for both of us. I ask him to follow the doctor’s instructions to push and I will work hard with him along the way so that both of us can go through the delivery smoothly.

On 22 Jan, my water bag burst in the evening and within 3 hours, my little prince has arrived into this big big world.

Delivery of my second child

As for my daughter, Ashlyn, being pregnant with her is more of a challenge. While I was pregnant with Ashlyn, I have to handle my morning sickness for 5 months. Enduring morning sickness for 5 months and looking after little Ashton, who was around 18 months old, singlehanded was no mean feat. My husband was very busy with work then.

I still remembered very clearly that Ashlyn arrived earlier than expected. All of us were expecting her arrival on Singapore’s birthday but in the end she arrived on 30 July.

30 July…a normal day as usual. I brought Ashton for his usual morning run, home for lunch and then nap. Suddenly, at about 2pm, my waterbag burst. I was alone at home with Ashton. I tried calling my husband but I could not reach him as he was in a controlled environment. I got quite panicky as Ashton woke up and started crying. I tried ample times to call my husband but to no avail. I could not find anyone to babysit Ashton and I can’t possible left him alone. I have to put many pieces of rags on the floor around me to stop Ashton from slipping on the wet floor as he was clinging on to me.

I tried calling my mum but that was just trying my luck as mom says she has something on for that day. I crossed my fingers and hoped I could reach her on the phone before she left home. Lucky lady’s on my side. Managed to get both my parents and my parents cancelled their appointment to help babysit Ashton. Thereafter, I managed to get my husband with the help of his colleague.

It was already about 4pm when my parents arrived. I made my way to the carpark enduring with the pain from contractions and all wet. I told myself, if I did not see my husband then, I will take a taxi to the hospital. My waterbag had burst for 2 hours and I was still at home. I was very worried about Ashlyn, who was still in the womb online Ampicillin and relieved that there were somebody to babysit Ashton.

My husband finally arrived and drove me to the hospital. When I reached the hospital, I was dilated by 8cm and Ashlyn was in my arms in less than an hour after admission.

Six years ago, breastfeeding was a tough job for me as I have no help from anyone and milk supply was low.  It was disheartening that I only managed to feed my daughter 30ml of breast milk a day for only the first month of her life.  But now, with my boy who is 8 months now, he is happily drinking up bottles of breast milk with ample supply stored in the freezer for perhaps another baby.

I told myself not to give up this time round and express my milk every 3hours even in the mid of the night.  Soon my milk came and it was ample for him to drink without any milk formula as supplement.  My supply was also good enough that my elder daughter could take a bottle every night and with more stores in the freezer.

I also have my hubby to thank as he helped me to massage every night to get rid of the blocked milk ducts and feeling of engorgement during the first few days.  It was very painful for me as I had many blocked milk ducts and without clearing them out, the milk supply would not have come so readily.

Having feed my son for 8months, I was lucky not to have suffered any major problems during breastfeeding except for an occasional blocked milk ducts and once, a bleeding nipple during to my little boy’s biting.

I guess I will probably feed him right up to 1 year old and maybe longer should my supply continues to be that good as the months go

13 Oct 2002, Sunday, 16 days before my EDD.

Damien was born via emergency c-section. Apparently, this silly boy passed motion in my womb and sucked it into his lungs. (Dirty fellow huh) He was oxygen-deprived by the time the gynae pulled him out. He did not wail, because he couldn’t. While other newborns buy cheap ampicillin were being clean up, and had their statistics taken, Damien was wheeled immediately to the NICU, where they inserted tubes into his throat, his hands and legs. He was attached to a life support machine to help him breath, because he can’t breath on his own. There were machines all around him to monitor his every breath and movements. While other new mothers were being taught how to hold their babies properly and breastfeed correctly, my gynae told me: “We’ve done whatever we could and there’s nothing much we can do at the moment, we can’t promise anything, it all depends on his will power.” While other new fathers were busy phoning or sms-ing friends and relatives to announce the arrival of their new bundle of joy, hubby had to make that dreadful call to inform our parents that yes, I’ve given birth and no, the baby is not doing well. My parents and in-laws rushed down first thing after they received the call. They were only allowed to view Damien through the glass panel of the NICU. I don’t know what’s their reaction seeing their grandson lying motionlessly with tubes all around, I believe it must be very painful, and I felt as if I’m the one causing them this pain… I only get to see my boy more than 12 hours after the operation; I broke down when I first set eyes on him! It’s really heartbreaking knowing that he must be suffering and yet I, as his mummy, cannot do anything to ease his buy ampicillin pain. The nurse came in and comforted me: “You have to be strong for him, if you’re sad, he can feel it!” and so off I went, leaving my poor baby still fighting for his dear life in the NICU.

17 Oct 2002, Thursday – 1 Nov 2002, Friday

The following 3 weeks were an emotional period for us, especially hubby, who had to work in the morning, rushed down to the hospital after work, applied for Damien's birth certificate (knowing full well that our little one might not make it), at the same time worry about how i'm coping physically and mentally The doctor in-charge would call us every morning to report his progress..for the first week, things were rather bleak, i always feared the worst had happened each time the phone rang, and i simply had to keep myself busy, talked to someone so as to stay sane… We went to the hospital every night, to talk to Damein. We would tell him the same thing over and over again: “Damien, mummy and daddy is here with you, don’t be afraid, you have to be strong ok? Everyone is waiting for you at home. Don’t sleep anymore, wake up and come home with us! Mummy and daddy want to hold you and hug you so much, you have to fight on, darling!” I know he can hear us! There was once I saw him open and close his mouth continuously, at the same time wriggle his arms and legs with all his might, I thought what had happened and quickly call for the nurses! What they told me sent me to tears: “Oh he’s crying, he can hear your voice, you know. Keep talking to him, this boy is fighting very hard!” Two weeks later, his condition improved, and we were allowed to carry him for the first time since he was born…no words could describe our feelings then..we saw a miracle in Damien..

2 Nov 2002, Saturday

Our little Ach Application hero finally won the battle and came home, three weeks after he was born. This is the first proper picture of Damien, taken 2 weeks after he’s born. I erased the one of him with tubes all around, knowing full well that the image will be etched in my heart forever. It's been nearly seven years and i'm surprised that i can still remember these details as if it just happened not too long ago…i gu We turned down well-meaning friends and colleagues who wanted Massilia Bail 2 SAS to visit, as we were too emotionally drained just by replying their smses and phone calls, let alone seeing their concerned faces. However, we really appreciated the presence of our families as they granted us the strength we needed. I remember one night, walking back from the NICU to my room, we passed by the Nursery Room, gazing at those pink and healthy little faces, I weep and told hubby: “Our baby should be here, not lying there with tubes all around!” ess deep inside, i'll never forget..

I started breastfeeding when i was in hospital. I was on partial breastfeed and it was then that i realised that breastfeeding is indeed very tiring because no matter how tired i was, i need to continue breastfeeding. I breastfeed for approximately a month because i developed infections. I had fever on and off and engorgement. I guess the stress was too overwhelmed for me to handle that i thought i was developing depression. Three days after I have delivered Ashley, I was still not discharged from the maternity ward. This is due to me not producing sufficient milk and hence not mastered the skill of breastfeeding yet. The midwives wanted to ensure that I would be able to feed Ashley well once I get back to home, hence they have decided to keep me longer in the maternity ward till my flow of milk regulate and when I was more comfortable with breastfeeding.

After day three, my supply of breastmilk increased and I was relieved that I was producing more milk then. My first feed wasn’t a pleasant one though. As I guided my baby girl towards my nipple, she didn’t know how to suckle, hence it was a long struggle before I finally got her latched on. Now, nobody ever shared with me that breastfeeding wasn’t painfree! I got a shocking sting at my nipple when Ashley has gotten her first ‘bite’ to devour the milk. I’m a Moon and I called my daughter Baby Moon. Her name is Jun Ling and now she is 3-year old. She is no longer a baby but a toddler.

My pregnancy experience with my girl was wonderful because I totally had no morning sickness. I didn’t feel like vomit or no appetite. I just felt normal and the only small problem was I felt giddy in the morning sometimes and easily get tired.

The really nightmare of mine was the month of confinement. According to Chinese custom, during the confinement month, we cannot wash hair, cannot take shower, cannot even “touch” the water. These are just the very basic and there are more “rules” like no air-con, no fan, no plain water, no drinking while standing etc.

Since my mom was doing the confinement for me and taking care of my baby, she really did a good job in reminding me of all these “cannot do”. So, I cannot take shower (don’t mention about wash hair), cannot online Ampicillin drink plain water (only ginger, longan, red dates soup), must sit down while drinking, and the “worst” for me was I need to take Chinese herb from day 1 of confinement to day 30.

Other than the Chinese herbs, I encountered sleeping problem during the confinement month. I couldn’t sleep well at night, especially slept with my baby who needed to breastfeed every two to three hours. I hardly get back to sleep again and that made me felt tired throughout the day.

I felt so uncomfortable when couldn’t buy ampicillin take shower and felt frustrated with my oily hair. I really want to thank my mom who was so patience to clear my oily hair with the wine and also use the hair dryer to dry the hair every few days.  I could feel the love of a mother especially after I being a mom myself.

He came home punctually after work and even cooked for me the confinement meals. He showed his love with his action and asked me to rest more and don’t think too much.

The confinement experience was really a good?! one! Now I’m expecting my No.2 and I would follow the same confinement custom of my mom. My grand grandma ever told my mom and now my mom told me, “it’s suffering for a month but stay healthy for the life time.” Many “No” but good for my healthy, “bitter” but good for my body and shape!

Breastfeeding Journey- Part 1

After being wheeled to the ward, reality starts to set in. The nurse came over and ask whether i want to breastfeed my baby. At that time, i was very nauseous and kept vomitting after delivery. It must be due to the large amount of entodox i inhale during labour. I just told the nurse, i will do it later. After many hours, i was still feeling very exhausted and unwell. The nurse came again and ask me to breastfeed. Being totally weak, the nurse suggested me to give a bottle instead and wait for me to regain some energy first. Afterall my sweet baby is already hungry and crying fiercely. As as "fresh" mum, i heeded for the nurse advice , thinking it make sense and i can start to breastfeed on the next feed. The nurse asked my hubby which milk formula do you want to give to your baby. My hubby and i was caught off guard, we didnt consider this factor because all i wanted was breastmilk for my baby. She was crying loudly and she just couldnt latch on properly. She was super impatient because my milk had not kicked in yet , only can see some colostrum. After sucking for some time, she was so impatient and angry and she refuses to latched. The nurse suggested to give her a bottle again to satisfy her hunger as it's already 3 hours since her last feed. Although unwilling but scared, i gave in to the bottle.

Tip: After delivery, only colostrum is presented during the 1st few days of breasfeeding. Colostrum is the " gold " of breastmilk. It has high level of immunoglobulin. It helps to protect your baby from infection and helps to stimulate your baby to stimulate the passage of meconuim, your baby's first stools.

During my stay in the hospital and the huge number of visitors everynow and then, i just try latching as and when i can  ( most of the time, ashley couldnt really latch on well )and eventually topping up with milk formula after every feed.

when i reached home on the 4th day, i was determined to regain breastfeeding exclusively again. I brought out my books and try every means and ways to have a successful latch.  Every time, i could not do it well. i kept blaming myself what is wrong with me. Sadly my actually milk supply had not even kick in yet. I was so stressed and with my in law not really pro breastfeeding, i was like a mad woman depriving my baby to feed because i locked myself in the room trying only to breastfeed my non crying ashley. I did it for a couple of hours and my baby was still crying, i finally give in to my in law request and gave her a bottle again… because of this, i think i may have mild depression, sometime i do cry and do not really want to see any visitors. Luckily i had a supportive hubby and he encouraged me not to be stress and also told my parents and inlaw not to provoke me and say things to make the situation worsen. At this point, i knew my daughter was "hooked " on bottle feeding as she is used to the fast and constant flow. i regretted on giving her the 1st bottle in the hospital.

Tip: Try to breastfeed as soon as you can after delivery. Even for C sect, you can also try to do it the same day after delivery. If you need to resort to formula, insist that the nurse feed with a spoon or a cup. Many nurses will not be happy as it is difficult and slow to feed. But this discouraged  your baby relying on the bottle and it makes things easier when you are well to resume breasfeeeding.

On the fifth day, finally milk supply kicks in. Still as determined, i resorted to expressing via a breastpump. my first pump was an Avent Manual hand pump. I start expressing but milk was still very little. But every 2 hours, i expressed and feed my baby via the bottle. I started to feel better at least she was able to take some expressed breastmilk. Ashley had jaundice and was hospitalised. Every day, i would bring the expressed milk to the hospital so she can benefit from it. It was not easy because sometimes i missed out on bonding with her because i have to express milk. With the manual pump, its really torturing on the wrist and fingers and to dismantle the parts after every feed to wash and sterilize just keep me busy throughout the whole day. This starts my journey of total expressing… I breastfeed ashley for 3 months plus occassionally topping with milk formula.  After going back to work, my work conditions does not permit to express at work and i was too exhausted when i was home and my supply just dipped tremendously. But seeing her  grow healthy day by day, i was more than happy to breastfeed her even its was just 3 months. The tiredness, cramps of using the manual breast pump was all worth it.

Tip: Do not give up breastfeeding, some breastmilk is better than none. Try not to stress yourself as this affects milk supply. Try various way such as hand expressing or with a pump if directly latching does not works for you

Breastfeeding Journey- Part 2

After having my first experience, i was more equipped. I breastfeed celeste about 2 hours after my labour. I faced the same difficulty as she was also learning to latch on.  I was very determined that i breastfeed her for every 2 hours even at times when she was not really hungry. For the 1st day , it was tough as the latch was only 5 min or 10 mins at times.  Celeste was found with little urine so the nurse suggested me to give a bottlefeed. With hesitation, i resisted and supplement with some glucose to prevent dehydration. With the help of one nurse, she told me to try nipple shields to see if it helps. Amazing it works and soon i get  the hang of it. Although some time  she only latch on for maybe 10-15 mins , i was still glad that she does not need any supplementary feeds thereafter. I did the same routine even for night feed. It was really draining but i did not mind a tough start for a long termed benefit.

Do you know? A newborn may have the sucking instincts but Succcessful Latch is a learning skill. Get all the help  you need while you are at the hospital to ensure your baby is able to latch well.

As I bid farewell happily to my days of headaches and nausea during my first trimester and progressed to the second trimester, I got a lot of good attention from my more obvious bump now.   Strangers started conversations on how many months was my pregnancy then and predicted if I was expecting a boy or girl.  Commuting on public trains and buses became a privilege as there seemed to be always be an empty seat somewhere reserved for me.  How nice!

I haven’t really thought much about the gender of my baby since Phil reassured me he doesn’t mind whether we will be having a son or daughter.   However I was weighing the differences and advantages of each gender and I came to a conclusion that both are really fine.  If I was expecting a boy, he will be easier to take care of as I wont be worrying about him getting scratches on his face after a fight or coming home late.  If I was expecting a girl, I can dress her up pretty and we both can go shopping and tea together.  Girls tend to be closer to their moms too! That is sure a bonus.

When my gynae announced I was having a girl, Phil and I started shopping for girls’ clothing and thinking about baby girls’ names.   We couldn’t decide on an ideal name hence we kept in mind those short listed ones.   The second trimester breezed through too soon and before I knew it, I was already progressing to my third trimester.  I’ve gone for my final medical checkup and was reassured that my baby was fine.  All I needed to do was to pack my bag and standby for baby’s arrival.  Although my tummy was protruding quite huge, my baby was estimated to be quite underweight.  I panicked and felt guilty that I probably did not consume sufficient nutritious food during my first two trimesters.   From then on, I attempted to have a tub of ice-cream each week, in addition of my daily dose of milk supply.

The wait for baby’s arrival was an agony, especially as it approached the estimated delivery date.  Whenever I felt some pain in my tummy, I would be thinking:”is it the moment now?”  Somehow the pain subsided and I knew it was a false alarm.

Each morning I would wake up wondering if Today is The Day.  Until one cooling night when it was so comfortable that I fell asleep almost immediately when I hit my bed.

I felt an unusual pain that woke me up after midnight.  As I was too tired to think much, I dismissed any thoughts and tried to fall asleep again.  Within a couple of seconds, I could feel there were some liquid rushed out of me.   I quickly sat up on bed and wanted to go to the restroom to check what has happened.  However during my short journey to the restroom, I would feel more water trickled down my thighs.  It was then that I realized my membranes were ruptured or otherwise what other mummies mentioned about “water bag bursting”.

Phil was awakened by my scream of panic.  “Where is my bag? Quick grab my bag and go to the hospital now!” I yelled as I get changed and wondering if the pain I was experiencing just now in bed will come back as contractions.  He was quite calm after he realized what was going on and he called the hospital to ask for instructions.  The maternity nurse advised that I stay at home until my contractions became stronger.  However I had decided to go to the hospital immediately so that the nurses can access my condition.

When I reached the delivery department, the nurses found out that there was some meconium [baby’s first stool] in my discharge and hence I needed to be induced as those indicate signs of my baby under stress.  My gynae arranged the drip and started the induction.  Within 4 hours, my contractions become stronger and stronger that I decided I needed some painkillers.  My threshold of pain has always been low so the contractions were indeed extremely unbearable for me.  When the midwife announced my cervix was only dilated by 4 cm, I requested for an epidural immediately as I cant imagine having to put up another 6 hours of pain for another 6cm dilation. My gynae gave his approval and an epidural was ordered for me.  Within half an hour, my contractions eased off and i could feel my lower body numbed.  What an amazing medical invention for ladies delivering their babies in a painless way!

I waited for another 4 hours while the midwife monitored my condition.  When she announced to me it was 10cm wide and my baby was ready to be delivered, Phil and me cheered unanimously.  Finally we were a step closer to welcoming our baby.

After pushing for half an hour, my gynae advised that vacuum assistance was required to deliver her.  With the help of the vacuum and one final push, our little darling emerged and greeted us with her eyes opened!  It felt surreal that this little one who has been in my tummy for nine months was now right in front of me,  All those months are worth the wait as I hold this miracle of life in my chest.  “Meet Ashley!” Phil proudly introduced the midwives while they wrote her name on the wrist band label. So Ashley is the name daddy finally decided on, and she is now 3 months old, still in my arms close to mummy!

It begins in 2005.
My water bag burst around 5am . I was sleeping at that time and woke up thinking to myself did i wet the bed? In a daze, i checked my bed and found it wet. Quickly awaken my hubby who was still in dreamland. Then we quickly search for Dr Lim, my gynae at TMC emergency number. He returned the call shortly and advise me to come to the hospital after breakfast.

Surprising both of us were quite calm but were tired as we just came back from Mr Bean cafe around 1 plus… Told my hubby to grab my hospital bag and his stuff .We reached Thomson Medical around 7 plus. Just like checking into hotel, ( it was so dim at the front reception) we told the nurse my waterbag burst and she took me to the observation ward.

Tip : if your waterbag burst, quickly put on a pad and bring some towels with you, cos the fluid gushes out intermintly. Put the towel before sitting down on the car seat

They hooked my up on the monitor and check my contractions. I had mild contractions but were not painful. The nurse will  then help to shave off some pubic hair below while in the observation ward.

Around 12 plus, contractions were starting to be stronger , started to feel some pain. Dilution check 6cm. Nurse suggest that i go to the delivery ward. Before that , she give me a Gel that is inserted to your butt hole. This is rather uncomfortable.

After going to the loo, i was pushed to the delivery ward . The nurse brief me on the pain relief available,  Entonox ( maybe called laughing gas) , pethidine, epidural etc . I did not opt for epidural as i wanted to see how well is my threshold of pain.  I dry run on the entonox ,so funny i still ask my hubby how come got no effect. Aiya it is not on yet.  Around 1 pm the real pain starts to set in, panic i quickly use the Entonox. Inhale so much that i feel so giddy and weak. Nurse checked, only 8 cm cannot push. OMG…. i as for the pethidine (injection on my thigh) which also did  not have much effect. I was really in great pain. the nurse before that poke one tube into my hand ( not sure whats that for) and the needle keep dropping out and i was bleeding. Finally around 5pm, it was time to push. Dr lim came and change into his operating suit within 2 min. It was really countless of pushes, i think my hubb pushes me more than buy ampicillin online i push. Ha! After that dr lim  aited for the placenta to be out and massage my tummy to get rid and blood clots, had a episiotomy so he stitch it back. Can feel stitching process but you do not feel painful anymore cos it is nothing compared to labour pain.

Tip : episiotomy is a surgical incision through the perineum made to enlarge the vagina and assist childbirth. Most Ampicillin cheap online asian woman requires an episiotomy as our skin texture are not as stretchable as caucasions. One good news, with this there is high chance you will not experience loosening vagina muscles

Birth Story 2

i was still working on my 39 week plus as my company still cannot to find a temp person to relieve my duties. Around 3am, i felt stomach discomfort and feels like diarrhea. went to the toilet many times but there was nothing. Went back to sleep and the stomach pain came again 4am. Suspected something was wrong, i timed the occurance of the pain. It came on 30 mins , then slowly to 20 mins. Luckily my hubby who work shift was home that night. Woke him up at 5 plus and told him i was having contractions. He still ask me am i sure cos he dont see that i was in pain. As usual , we called Dr Lim and told us to take our time to come to the hospital later. We had breakfast then reach the hospital around 7 plus am. when i reach Thomson Medical, this time i still press for Q no. The counter staff ask me am i admitted for C sect cos i didnt seems to have signs of labour. i said "No", i was having contractions. She laughed and said contraction no need press Q no la…Quickly i went to the observation ward.

Usual SOP, check dilation. wa was already 6cm. Good News. the nurse ask if i feel pain. Not really i said. But i ask if i can take epidural cos i scared i cannot take the pain later. She laughed and asked me to save $$ cos already 6 cm dont feel pain no need take….

Tip: One epidural only lasts 6 hours, and you have to decide before 6cm dilated. After that they do not allow you to take cos it takes time for the jab to work on you.

ok  i thought, anyway can survive 1st time round should be alright.Its funny this time they did not inject the gel into my butt hole or shave my pubic hair. Around 830 am, i was pushed to the delivery ward. My hubby was commenting that now they have  big comfortable arm chair , shiok for daddies. he still took some picture around the delivery ward. Pain was getting intense but still bearable. I even slept for a while with the contractions. After 15 min ,the contractions were very painful, used some Entonox ( this time i only inhale a few times) and the pethidine jab again ( this only reduces 40% of the pain , take 15 min to be in effect). "OMG "around 9 plus, was really in great pain and keep asking my hubby why Dr lim is still not here yet… i have the urge to push but keep restraining myself as didnt want to have a tear. Finally Dr lim came and confirm that it was time to push. *Phew* baby celeste was out in 3 pushes @3.02kg.

The after -delivery was longer than the 1st cos i opted to donate the cord blood to the Singapore Cord Blood Bank. Hopefully it helps other. Dr lim cleared the placenta and blood clots . Took the stem cells from the umbilical cord and finally daddy cuts it.

Note : For cord banking the mother is required to draw 3 big tubes of blood after delivery for testing. In cases of complication, this should be ommited and safety of baby and mother should be priority. Talk to your doc on this.
